FAQ

About Our Gear

What makes Chuckwalla different from other sun protective clothing brands?

Most sun protective clothing focuses on UPF ratings and stops there. We go further. We are transparent about every finish applied to our fabrics, we prohibit antimicrobial treatments and PFAS chemistry entirely, and we back every UPF claim with a test report. We also do not lock ourselves to one fabric or one story. We choose the best available material for each product, test it, and tell you exactly what is in it and what is not.

Why and how is the romper designed with convertible coverage?

Babies need protection outside, but they also need to touch, feel, and explore. That is why the romper has fold-over cuffs on the hands and feet. Fold them over for more sun coverage, or flip them back when your baby wants to use their fingers and toes.

The hood adds coverage for the head and neck, including the back of the head when your baby is snuggled against you in a front carrier. When it is not needed, it rests back out of the way.

It is designed to adapt to the moment, not keep your baby covered the exact same way all day.

Do you use synthetic fabrics for some of your clothing?

Yes, and we are thoughtful about when and why. Synthetic fabrics like polyester have real performance advantages for active outdoor use. They dry faster, manage moisture better, and hold up to repeated washing. Some of our products use performance polyester blends specifically because those properties matter for high-activity outdoor wear. What we do not do is add unnecessary chemical treatments on top of any fabric, synthetic or natural. The fiber does its job. We do not pile chemistry on top of it.

How do you choose your fabrics?

Every fabric we use goes through a multi-step evaluation before it is approved. We require written confirmation from our mill that no antimicrobial treatments, PFAS chemistry, or formaldehyde-based finishes have been applied. We require a complete list of every finish used. And we require a UPF test report before we make any sun protection claim. We ask specific questions and hold our suppliers to clear standards on what goes into our fabrics. Our fabrics are sourced from mills that test against rigorous international standards for harmful substances, including both legally regulated chemicals and those known to be harmful but not yet regulated in the US.

Are your fabrics treated with PFAS or antimicrobial finishes?

We do not add PFAS chemistry or antimicrobial treatments to our products. Our focus is on performance features that make sense for babies and kids, like tested UPF protection, comfort, breathability, and durability.

The fabric used to make this garment has been tested for harmful chemicals, including both regulated and non-regulated substances that may be harmful to human health.

What does it mean that your fabrics are tested for harmful substances?

The fabric used to make this garment has been tested for harmful chemicals, including both regulated and non-regulated substances that may be harmful to human health.

We do not use the certification name or logo unless we have permission to do so, but harmful-substance testing is one of the ways we evaluate materials before using them.

Is the fabric good for sensitive skin?

Our modal fabric is soft, smooth, and chosen for next-to-skin comfort. For babies and kids, we look for materials that feel gentle, breathe well, and manage moisture without adding unnecessary treatments.

The modal lyocell blend gives the fabric a smooth hand-feel, which can help reduce friction against delicate skin. The fabric used to make this garment has also been tested for harmful chemicals, including both regulated and non-regulated substances that may be harmful to human health.

Every child’s skin is different, so if your child has eczema, allergies, or a known skin condition, check with your pediatrician or dermatologist before use.

Sun Protection

Is the UPF protection from a chemical treatment?

No. Our UPF protection comes from the fabric itself, including the fiber, yarn density, and knit construction. It is not added as a topical sun-protection finish.

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It measures how much UV radiation passes through a fabric. A UPF 40 rating blocks 97.5% of UV rays. A UPF 50+ rating blocks more than 98%. Both are considered excellent protection by dermatology standards.

Each of our products lists its specific tested and certified UPF rating so you know exactly what you are getting.

Do I still need sunscreen if my child wears Chuckwalla gear?

Not on the skin the gear covers. UPF rated clothing protects covered skin completely. Pair our tops and rompers with one of our UPF rated hats for face, ear, and neck coverage. You will still want sunscreen on any skin that is not covered. But every inch protected by Chuckwalla gear means fewer chemicals on your child's skin.

Why does sun protection in clothing matter for babies and toddlers?

Babies and young children have thinner skin than adults, which means UV radiation penetrates more easily and sun damage accumulates from infancy. Clothing provides consistent, reliable coverage that does not wear off, get missed during application, or require a cooperative toddler to reapply.

Is the romper okay for warm weather?

Yes, it is designed for sun protection, not heavy warmth. The fabric is lightweight and breathable, but babies can still overheat in hot conditions.

Use shade, airflow, hydration, and breaks as needed, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

Can my baby wear this in a carrier or stroller?

Yes. The romper is designed for real outdoor use, including carriers and strollers.

The hood can help cover the back of the head and neck when your baby is snuggled against you in a front carrier, and the fold-over cuffs let you adjust hand and foot coverage as conditions change.

Sizing and Fit

How do I choose the right size?

Use your child's current height. We size true to standard US conventions. See our full Size Guide for height ranges by size.

Will my baby grow out of this too quickly?

Our rompers are cut with extra length built in and the stretch of the fabric extends the fit even further. Many parents find their baby wears one to two sizes longer than expected, which means most babies will get a full season of wear out of a single size. One of our own babies was 10 months old and still fitting comfortably in the 3-6M, and she was in the 98th percentile for height. A well made piece of gear that carries your baby through a full season of sunny days is worth it.

Care and Washing

How do I wash Chuckwalla gear?

Hand or machine wash cold with similar colors. Hang to dry. Iron on low temperature if needed. Avoid bleach.

Will the UPF rating wash out?

No. The UPF protection comes from the fabric structure, not a topical finish. It is built into the fiber, yarn density, and knit construction.

That means it does not wash out like an added chemical treatment.
